Best Humidifier Humidifier Parts?

Sandra asks…
Will a “dry” cigar humidifier pull extra moisture out of dried fruit?
The humidifier crystals are bone dry and are designed to keep a relative humidity of 70% when saturated. I have fruit that I have dehydrated for the most part and was wanting to know if I put the fruit in a ziploc bag with the humidifier if it would pull the rest of the moisture out of the fruit?
answers:
In theory yes. But I think you might have a relative mass problem. I gather your plan is to put the humidifier crystals in dry and kind of reverse the process that is used for humidifying cigars. There are two issues that I know of.
1. You don’t say how much fruit you have and how much more water you want to remove but the crystals may not have the capacity to remove that much water. It would be necessary to do some calculations to determine the water holding capacity of the crystals. Remember 70% is RELATIVE humidity not absolute moisture content. You might need a ton of crystals.
2. Since the crystals are only good to 70% relative humidity (unknown moisture content) they will equilibrate with the fruit to the same humidity (unknown moisture content). Will the fruit be dry enough because you don’t say what you want to final moisture content to be.
Having said all of the above, give it a try you have nothing to lose.

Maria asks…
How do you clean a humidifier?
We have a Vicks humidifier that we’ve used for our son a couple times when he’s had a stuffy nose. I just noticed the humidifier has a little bit of water in it (from a couple months ago) and I want to rinse out the water and clean any other part necessary to make sure mold doesn’t form. What parts of the humidifier should I clean? (other than emptying the water holder?)
I have no idea where the directions are, and I want to make sure there isn’t any mold forming anywhere on or in the humidifier from the standing water that has been inside it.
answers:
Clean the tank and any other area you can reach and probably replace the filter if it has one or the cartridge. I read on the instructions you should empty the water after 5 days of non-use and replace the filter if not used for more then 5 days. Ours has the cartridge though, so I am not sure if you need to replace that or not….sorry I can’t be of more help.
