What kind of humidifier should i get? or do i even need one?
I just moved into a new home and in our master bedroom it is always really hot and stuff and i wake up all stuffed up and sometimes with bloody noses. Would a humidifer help? And what kind? hot? cold? mist? …. there are some at the health food store that put off a light cloud of mist but i dont know if they would work as good as something say from walmart.

A tough question to answer yes or no without a lot more info, such as the type of climate you live in & whether this happens in the summer or winter. You usually only need to add humidity in the winter; summertime is mostly damp enough already. Stuffy/runny noses and bloody noses could be low humidity, or a reaction to some of the materials used in construction (if this is a brand-new house, not just new for you). Low humidity also shows up as lots of static electric sparks off of folks’ finger tips – on door knobs, each other, expensive electronics, etc. (I smoked a VCR that way once).

If you have a ducted warm air heating system, you’d be best served by a central humidifier installed at the furnace. If you don’t have any ductwork, then a portable unit will have to do. The method it uses to evaporate the water is less important than the amount of humidity produced. Bigger is not always better. Research the models available as to the quantity of water evaporated, and the amount of moisture you would need for your size house to maintain about 50% relative humidity.

Linda asks…

What should I do about my humidifier?

Weeks ago I bought a Hunter Care Free humidifier(not the one with the night light), and after a couple of days it started making a “whirring”/strange motor noise. I called the company tech support and they said to take it back and exchange it.

So I got a new one and it was fine, but now it is starting to make the same noise again. It’s not as bad as the first one and I only hear the noise when it is on the number 1 and 2 setting, sometimes on 3.

This is really frustrating and I don’t know what’s wrong with it. The first time I called tech support all the woman did was tell me to turn it on then turn it off – I don’t know what that was for or even if she heard the noise. I bought it from Walmart if that makes any difference. Should I call support again and exchange it? Or should I just buy a new brand? I like this one because it doesn’t require a lot of care and maintenance like others and I don’t need to spend a fortune every year on replacement filters because this one never needs replacing.

If anyone knows of another brand that is similar, e.g. doesn’t require a lot of maintenance(optional) and most importantly doesn’t require replacement filters can you put that in your answer?

Have any of you had problems with this humidifier? How did you resolve the problem?

Thanks.
I can’t afford to spend a lot of money on another humidifier, the one I have was $35. Any reccomendations have to be under $50. Thanks.

In our showroom we use a humidifier made by Honeywell. It is called QuietCare. This humidifier is fairly quiet and works very well. Keeps our flooring at 40-50 degree humidity level which is optimal to keep wood floors from warping and bending. The water needs to be replace once per day during winter months in Minnesota (very low humidity level). For more information please visit our website.

We have a VICKS $19.99 humidifier and it works really well!! I bought my son an expensive humidifier when he was first born and it only lasted a season. So I thought I would buy a cheap one, that way I wouldn’t be out a lot of money if it broke after a few months. It worked for a year and 1/2! It probably would have kept going, but it had gotten pretty dirty.
